John Jaques II won a place in sporting history and a Gold Medal for introducing Croquet and Jaques croquet sets into England at the Great Exhibition in 1851. His croquet display attracted such wide attention that the wonderful new game of croquet and Jaques' wonderful croquet sets quickly became the vogue, not only in Britain but across Europe and throughout the British Empire. Jaques Croquet and Croquet sets, together with their croquet equipment became especially popular in India, reportedly played by The Viceroy himself with a solid ivory Jaques Croquet mallet, made by Jaques as part of their finest Croquet set.
