Shuffle Board Game Rules

Rules of playing the Game of ShuffleBoard

History of the Game
Sjoelbak, or Indoor Shuffleboard, originating in the Low Countries before the war, is now very popular in several Northern European countries including Holland,   Denmark and Germany.

Traditional Games
It shares affinity with traditional Deck Shuffleboard, introduced by the company in the heyday of the transatlantic liners, and still popular  on the present day burgeoning cruise liners.

It has a quadruple bridge, the “gate bar”, for the discs to slide through to score.  It is open one end, with a starting bar, under which the discs must be slid.  Each gate has a different score and compartments behind the gates collect the scoring discs, which must not project any part out onto the playing surface to score.  A wooden bar and a sliding lid allow the discs to be stored in the 2 central compartments when not in use.

There are 30 shuffleboard discs, which a player has 3 tries to slide through one of the gates.  This make this a great traditional Game

Game Play
He firstly slides all 30 discs one at a time towards the gates, trying to get as many as possible through the gates.  Those discs through the gates are scoring discs and are stacked at the back of their respective compartments.  He then plays all the non- scoring discs a second time, repeating the process, and finally a third time.

Any discs which bounce back through a gate, or leave the board or compartment during play, are played again.  The discs are then all totalled as follows before the next player has his turn.  Discs which have gone through the gates score as shown on the gate bar.  However, complete sets of 1 disc in each of the four compartments count double.

Scoring
As an example, a completed turn with 8 discs in the 2 compartment, 8 in the 3 compartment, 4 in the 4 compartment and 7 in the 1 compartment, would score as follows:
4 complete sets (2+3+4+1 = 10 x 2 = 20) x 4 = 80 points,
plus 4 x 2 + 4 x 3 + 3 x 1 for the incomplete set discs.
A score of 103 points in total.

The highest score in a turn is therefore 148, 7 sets of 4, (7x20) totalling 140, plus 2 discs in the 4 compartment.

Matches are usually 5 or 10 games with all scores being totalled to determine the winner.  In league or team play, teams of 5 or more play 2 or more games each; scores being totalled together in the same way.

Note:    Use of a bees wax based wax polish on the discs and the playing surface will ensure fast sliding of the discs.
